Question Suggestion for a bass preamp..

Hi all,

Not for me but, my brother is an amateur electric bass player and recently he requested a bass preamp from me. Hes a poor man like me and the costs are critical for that preamplifier.
And the worst thing is I dont understand from instrument things and I havent made even one circuit for the instruments in my life. But after a quick internet search I found that;

As I understand; that guy (Albert Kreuzer) is a guru about DIY bass "things"..
Anyway,
When I examine the circuit, I've noticed thats a "normal" preamp stage with a lot of gain.. Then I thought that BF245s are some noisy for espeacially the first stage, and also theyre not really for the sound operations I guess.. So,
- If I replace all those BF245s with 2SK170s, may I have some sonic improvement (not for a listener but for a bass player) ?
- And the same question for TL072, should I replace it with a OPA2134 or LM4562 opamp?
What do you think? Should I make some mods on it or leave as the original?

Bass guitar players usually have different ideas about good sound from home audio aficionados.

Take into account with what kind of speaker this amp will be combined. Usually a big woofer with low upper frequency limit compared to home speakers. Noise that you would find annoying at home may not even be reproduced by it.
Most of the time musicians, especially guitar and bass guitar players like high distortion, most of all 2nd harmonics. They even buy appliances that produce distortions artificially to "improve" and individualize their instruments sound. Just look at all those switches and potentiometers to influence the frequency response.

Make your brother happy with the original circuit first. After a while change the components you like and ask him for his opinion. Maybe he likes the changes. But don't be disappointed, if he does not.

In fact he told that what kind of sound he wants,
"Tubelike sound and not much treble and bass, like 60s AM radios..."
Do you think this circuit gives that sound?

There's a thread in the Musical Instruments section of the forum that is dedicated to a build of this very preamp, you can probably glean some useful info from there...
