What about using BTL car amp IC?

Even with less than 12V, you can get loud sound.

I second what was said above - look at the 41Hz site. I built a Amp 6 (class D) recently, no regrets. The bulk of your weight will come with the battery. I wouldn't worry much about speaker effiency or amp wattage - I doubt you'll need much in total. I use an iPod with my 20Wpc Amp6 (and Bofu BIBs), and it gets really really loud (louder then chainsaws).
