And now for something completely different, and hopefully a lot of fun as well.
Here's a challenge for all you chip amp builders to come up with the best Steampunk chip amp. What is Steampunk? From Wikipedia: Steampunk is a subgenre of fantasy and speculative fiction which came into prominence in the 1980s and early 1990s. The term denotes works set in an era or world where steam power is still widely used—usually the 19th century, and often set in Victorian era England—but with prominent elements of either science fiction or fantasy, such as fictional technological inventions like those found in the works of H. G. Wells and Jules Verne, or real technological developments like the computer occurring at an earlier date. Some examples of Steampunk? One of my favorites, a Steampunk laptop: ![]() A Steampunk watch: ![]() A Steampunk mouse: ![]() A Steampunk sculpture: ![]() Steampunk glasses: ![]() A Steampunk guitar: ![]() And although fairly common among Steampunk contraptions, they don't necessarily have to look like they've been sitting in an attic for 100 years as this beautiful lamp by Frank Buchwald illustrates: ![]() So there you have some ideas and inspiration. Now get out there and hit those antique and junk stores! ![]() Oh, and if anyone who decides to take up the challenge needs to have any wire or cable covered in cloth, let me know and I'll be happy to help out. se |

I love the style. But it breaks my heart to see beautiful antique objects being hacked, cut, chopped and generally destroyed for temporary kicks. Please don't encourage people to do that. By all means learn the skills to work with materials like brass, wood, leather etc But we need those increasingly rare originals as examples and inspiration.
Sorry to sound like a soil sport but I love those old objects.

I don't think works like this are actually (at least usually) made of "antiques" but rather made to look as if they were. I have seen a lot of this sort of art, and it is usually made from contemporary stuff you can get cheaply, or make yourself. I have never seen anything truly worth anything hacked up to create a piece. Rest easy. Sometimes those things have been used would probably otherwise just sit in the landfill.Cheers! Russ

I started up building something like this, but got suddenly busy working on refinement of the original design when I realized what exactly is happening with my tube buffered gainclone. It might take a while before I'm ready to work on adding brass and wood to the original all-aluminium box... The main thing is that I have to box the PSU first...
