Default Pre-Amp for Chip-Amp?

I was wanting to start on my first chip-amp project with a dual mono kit from Brian at chipamp.com. I mostly run a turntable, and I was wondering if I first need to run the TT to a pre-amp, then to the mono amps? Or will the monos work well without the pre-amp? If I need a preamp, does anyone have any suggestions for a pre-amp kit or schematic to use with this configuration?

Thanks,

Jason

You need a phonoamp for a TT.. it not only amplifies the very weak output... and also corrects frequency response.

Look at the vsps as an easy phono amp...

Hi Jason

You need a pre-amp or more specifically a phono amp to amplify and equalize the output of a cartridge. If moving coil (MC) cartridge is employed, you need one more pre-amp! Typically, signal strength along the chain is as follows

Moving magnet (MM) cartridge : 3 mV -> Phono amp: 100 mV -> Pre-amp: 1V -> Power Amp -> Speaker

MC outpus is well under 1 mV. So, a pre-amp, either passive or active, needs to bring the level up to equivalent to that of MM output. Note, equailization (RIAA) is mostly done at phono amp.

Hope this helps.
