Hi Gang,
I was wondering of anyone has tried to convert an svideo cable into audio (balanced or unblanced) cables with either rca or xlr connectors. I bought a bunch of these (PR120) off ebay and find them a bit short to be pratical as a video cable. I have extra rca and xlr connectors too. http://www.araccessories.com/pro2_video_svideo.html. I was thinking of making into either balanced mono or stereo cables. Any thoughts on the sound quality. I was also thinking of using them inside my amp case as connecting cable from the rca sockets to the amp boards. Or would it be better to use network cable and merge the same ends together into one mono cable? Before I get flamed as a cheap #@#$ , the justification is to recycle my obsolite items into something I need before a wasting cash. Thanks, Adrian |

They should work fine.
Even if they wouldn't be my option, they are shielded cables that should do fine the way you are thinking of. |

Not really that good for line lvel interxonnects since S cable optimized for high fequency transmission, excepy if in cvase you love very speedy and transparant sound.
However, S cable could be great for phono cable connect from tonearm to phono amp. Actually if you want something cheap but great for line level interconnects, I suggest you try using a 50 ohms coaxial cable, you may be suprsie. |

I agree with carlmart, they will work just fine. It would be neat to have a source and amp with s-video jacks, then you could use the cable as-is.

Unfortunately those connectors are rather fragile, so they wouldn't stand too much abuse, which any RCA would. Or even better an XLR. In my TV, where I plug and unplug things a lot, I am using two S-video cables with 4-pin XLRs in the middle, so I unplug them there. It works like a charm! |

Thank you gents.
50ohm cable, interesting, but all I have in surplus is RG6 leftover from a satelite install, and I think that's 75ohms. If I decide to make it into unbalanced cables, should I ground one end of the shield (s?) to the chasis ground on the source or amplifier. Any suggestions on the wire hookups? Thanks, Adrian |
