Default stock head unit quality?

i have a 2003 honda civic LX with the stock system. I cannot find any specs in the manual for the head unit but from inside the trunk I can see the labels on the underside of the drivers -- which are -- I believe -- Pioneer full range drivers.

If I were to only upgrade the head unit to a Panasonic 50W x 4 for about 120$ would I hear a significant change in quality? I wish there was a Tripath for that price, but I only saw the Panasonic that is ~500$.

I wasn't trying to go down a road of car audio, but wanted a simple change to make my car stereo more tolerable.

Suggest replacing the Speakers FIRST.. the OEM ones are the biggest bottleneck.. The head unit can be replaced later for even more improvement.
