Default Depth Charge Amplifier problems

Here is the situation.... A friend gave me a DC-400 amp about a year ago and it was working great. Then about 6 months ago I quit working and by the smell I knew something in it fried. I finally got around to cracking it open and had to replace 3 irfz44n transistors. It was working great once again. Until yesterday! The protection light is on and the sub sounds muffled, it can barley be heard fron a couple of feet away. I have already tried another sub and the same problem exists. What else could be wrong inside the amp? No other parts are visably fried. I know that when 1 of the transistors goes that there is generally something else wrong, so what are some common things that may cause this.
