Default Which High Quality Car amps with guts??

Who makes some decent amps that can drive ANYTHING? You know the ones with rugged output stages and power supplies that double ouputs from 4 to 2 ohms and possibly quadruple into 1 ohm.?

Not necessarily enormous power but good power delivery.

Hi Mikett,

It's easy to make an amp double its power each time the load is halved. It's done through regulation of the switching power supply but to do it, you have to limit the amp at lower ohm loads. As I remember it, this was originally used as a selling point for the older home amplifiers from the 60's and 70's. For those amps, they were so heavily built that the power supply rail voltage sagged very little as the load was halved. This took brute force, not a trick like regulation.

With regulation, it's easy to do this. For example, if you find the max power an amp can produce into its lowest rated ohm load (let's say 2 ohms), then, with regulation, cut the unloaded rail voltage back to the rail voltage used to produce the 2 ohm max power and rate the amp at 1/2 of the max power, the amp will double it's rated power when the load is cut in half (i.e. 4 ohms to 2 ohms).

The same amp without regulation could produce more power into 4 ohms if the rail voltage was allowed to vary naturally with the load but the specs would not look as impressive.

This doesn't mean that all regulation is undesireable/useless or that reguated amps are in some way bad but the fact that an amp can double it's rated power as the load is halved isn't indicative of the quality of an amplifier.
