Whats a thumbnail? I thought I knew what one was but there doesn't appear to be one on any of the posts that mention them.

I wouldn't hold that against them. Sanyo & NEC each have made some terrific IC driver stages. I'd be sure Mc evaluated the pros & cons of discrete vs. IC before finalizing the design. I doubt cost was the determining factor.
