Ok guys here is my game plan.
What I am referencing as far as sound goes is the Infinity Reference ($199) and Kappa ($299) component systems for cars. I figure those pricing schemes are way out of line no different than home audio speakers bought at a hifi shop. I was considering using the RS150 (or maybe the DA135 if I want to keep costs down) for the midbass driver and I need some help picking out a tweet to match up. I would like to keep the cost for the drivers around $100. TIA Ethan |

Hi Ethan:
I am also looking at PE for making my own component set. I agree that the Infinity and other name brand sets are out of budget. I am considering the Goldwood 7" GW-S650/4 and the Goldwood tweeters GT-322. For the crossover, either the Dayton 260-146 or the PE 260-175. I figure this combination would cost ~ $90 depending on which crossover. That's still less than half of an Inifinity, Polk, MTX, or others. Sorry I don't really have a recommendation for your tweeter to compliment your Dayton. I have not spent the $ on a DIY project yet to know if it does in fact compete with the $200-$300 sets at half the price. Hopefully this will start some responses to your thread. I would be interested to hear from others that have built their own component sets too. Bryan |

I too am obsessed with killing midlevel consumer sets with a penny budget diy project. Have you guys found some winning combinations? I've toyed with the idea of several different ones.
The RS 150 is a great driver, but lower cost is nice. I'm curious about the dayton classic but its shielded. THe Goldwood is a bit weak even for the $. I have a list of sub $20 drivers I plan to try in the future. lets hear your experiences. |

Dayton rs150-4 mids and ND20FA-6 tweeters. Before you all start yelling at me that the tweets are 6 ohm, I know that. Everything is powered and XOd by the head unit (Alpine 9855). I haven't heard any other component sets to make a comparison, but to me, this setup sounds awesome. It's much better than stock speakers, and it gets loud enough (18w rms/channel).
XO points are: HP: 63 hz, 12dB/oct LP: 3.2k, 24 dB/oct HP: 3.2k, 24 dB/oct |
