In searching for my next HU I was looking hard at decks with iPod control. My last iPod was stolen about 5 years ago and I never replaced it, but when I had it I used it. I never used my iPod outside of the car though, so I don't see the need to pay a premium price for an iPod just to store music in my ride.
What is preventing me from just grabbing a compact 250g external drive, stashing it under the dash, and plugging it in? Will the constant power cycling damage it? The HU I'm thinking of says it recognizes 999 folders and two hundred some files per folder. I'm thinking I could store a LOT of MP3s.
Of course, I would have to give up my playlists unless I manually make folders for them...
