Rewinding should be an absolute last resort.

You don't need to coat windings unless there is a known problem with a particular amp (like the output filter inductors in a few clone amps). If you apply fixative to precisely the correct points, it will solve the problem. If you coat the windings for no good reason and you need to work with the windings later, it will be VERY difficult.

I'd suggest that you find the short first. You may have to wait days (or longer) for the short to appear again. When you find the location of the shorted windings, you can insulate it and be confident that the amp will be reliable (except in very rare cases where there are multiple shorts).
