Are there any other protection circuit designs used?

In most of the class D amps that use the low resistance shunts, op-amps are used because the voltage drop through the resistors is too low to forward bias a transistor. In class B and class AB amps, the voltage across the emitter/source resistors is enough to forward bias a transistor so a transistor can be used.

well, these two amps that wouldn't run at 1ohm strapped (rising to 2ohm total) are now in a different setup, running at 0.5ohm each no problem so far...

Failed setup was two Elevation Audio SQX 12's, dual 4ohm coils, all four coils in parallel (0.975ohm DC resistance, rising to 2ohm)

The setup that is now working, is four Pioneer 305c subs, single 4ohm, all coils in parallel (0.75ohm DC resistance, rising to 1.9ohm)

All in all, I don't get it.
