The hifonics amps that use hip4080 & 82 are they surface mount?

The HIP4080 is rarely surface mount because they fail virtually every time the transistors they're driving fail. I don't know of any hifonics amp that uses an HIP4082.

The very old now Brutus line used the chip as I recall, and they just like every other manufacturer that used them, had them socket-ed to the board so they could be replaced even at the factory for the very reason Perry said above...I also have never seen any of the HIP series that was not in a socket and never SMD...except the PPI 1200/2350/21400 which used the HIP-4081 that were soldered to the board in the power supply as fet gate drivers for that amps H bridge design power supply...
