what to use on traces once the coating has come off and its bare?

If the trace is intact, you really don't have to do anythig to it assuming that it's not loose enough to make contact with anything else.

Other options

tin it with solder to make it more rigid and to prevent oxidation
Apply a fixative to it
solder a wire along the entire length of the bare area
