Hi all, is anyone familiar with this amp? last of the decent Sony stuff, seams quite well built inside! anyway, the issue is it's stuck in protection and pulling 8 amps, all psu fets and outputs check out OK, something tells me it's a shorted transformer, I poked around a bit there and amp draw is around 1 amp now but amp still in protection.. will measure V on pwm if that helps..

kinda fixed this! as mentioned above, the amp is now only pulling 1amp and works fine, but I wriggle the transformer it goes back up to 8amps! i can see where it's shorting and it's the thinner wires. what can I use to isolate the wires? lacquer of some description?

It depends on the point where it's shorted. If you can slide an adhesive coated insulator (can be as simple as a piece of paper coated with adhesive), that will stop the windings from shorting.
