In my 15+ years of tinkering with my own mobile setups and many friends/families cars, I've never heard a JL Audio sub that wasn't impressive, provided it was in a well built correct enclosure.
AFAIK, you've been misinformed as to the dual coil thing. What a dual coil sub does is provide more flexibility in wiring, it does nothing to improve sound quality. Here's the JL sub you mentioned cheap Car Audio wholesale distributor Alpine Pioneer HID Lights Clarion Hifonics Kenwood Boss - Ikesound.com - JL Audio 12W3v3-4 FYI, you'll likely get more feedback in the Car Audio section of the forum. Welcome !

I'm moving this to car audio for obvious reasons. Good luck with the answers.

DVC only gives you more flexibility on loads. You can wire them different and get different loads (what ever fits your amplifier better).
I for one dont think DVC are any better than SVC, except for more different loads. Another good thing about DVC is if one voice coil goes out you still have one left, just dont expect to get the full rated power. The power is actually cut NOT in half, but 2/3 of the power rating is lost. Keep in mind the bigger the voice coil the more power handling it has. I just can't see how a 2" voice coil and a 96oz ceramic magnet can produce 1000watts. My favorite sub (the stroker) has a HUGE magnet @ 25lbs, yes its measured in lbs not oz (which is about 400oz) and is rated at 1000watts. I used 250watts before and that does the trick. |
