My display just went dark the other day. Anyone know of the fix for this problem? I have the service manual for it, and there is not much detail about the faceplate. More-so the main sections.....
My understanding from research is this was a common problem with them and I was hoping someone could steer me in a direction for repair. Maybe with a little luck someone has done this before. I pulled the faceplate apart and there was no obvious signs of damage. All the resistors added up within tolerance. Not sure... the problem might be on the main circuit board. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. |

For anyone else who might need it, it can be found here.

If the face of the head unit moves, the ribbon could be faulty. That's more common on newer head units. I don't remember having that problem much from the older head units.
It's also possible that the power supply for the EL display has failed. It's the small metal box connected to the head unit.

Verrrry interesting... The EL display has like a contrast to it that still appears at night or in the shade, but you can't read anything at all with any sort of glare. The blue ring still glows as well as the station buttons, etc. Just no lit up display. I didn't know that lil box that is connected to the back of the HU was for the EL display... I'll open it up when I get back home and have a look see...
I'll go over the ribbon too, should the box not hold any signs. Thank you as always Perry. |

That external box is a bipolar +/- 15 volt power supply for the display IIRC. I have a broken CDX-C90 with a dead display also. I sent it in to Sony Repair several years ago and they told me parts to repair it are no longer available. I moved on to other projects and never attempted to troubleshoot the external power supply. I have strong suspicion this had failed for the previous owner I purchased it from on Ebay. The outer braided ground shields for this external box were all stripped bare at the entry point to the chassis and poorly covered with electrical tape. Someone had been monkeying around with this circuit. The seller told me it was in excellent working condition. The display was DOA.
The dishonest seller was a character named WeldingJunkie on Ebay who lived in St. Johns, Newfoundland at the time. If you ever run across him selling used audio equipment on Ebay, stay away. PayPal was useless in recovering my money. They said for International purchases, they would only reimburse me for shipping expenses. Good luck with yours. |
