Default Car Audio newb question on subs

My question has to do with how and where to mount subs in a car. Do you lose a lot by just putting the boxed sub in the trunk or should the driver actually be in the cabin of the car?

It depends on the woofer but, in general, you'll get stronger deep bass if the woofer is in an enclosure in the trunk (assuming that there's a way for the bass to get from the trunk to the interior of the vehicle).

Yes, I had planned on putting it in a box but I didn't know if firing through the back seat would give enough apparent bass.

well if you have big enough hole, like folded down seat, you won't have problems

or detachable rear panel.. depending on car make, but those sound the best when that panel is removed.
personally, i drilled couple holes and put the speaker covers on em because trunk dont have that panel but alot of tin panels. works just fine (if you have holes / covers big enough)

So I should just make holes in the package shelf under the rear window (this is a Saturn sedan).

saturn sedan (accordint to pics) has detachable rear seats, you can have one seat put down if you dont like cutting car interior.
