Default Blown Subs?

For the last few weeks, when driven hard for long periods of time, my RE Audio SX12 starts giving off a burning smell. I reduce the volume when this happens, but the cone of the sub is pretty hot to the touch by that time and the smell lingers for a while.

I assume the voice coil is getting hot, but I didn't care much as the voice coil was burnt pretty good a long time ago when the outputs on my amp shorted, it sent 50+ volts to the sub for a couple minutes until I could shut it down. It worked fine after, but I knew going forward the sub might have a short life.

Now the sub no longer gets hot, but it doesn't get as loud and I can only measure 4 ohms at the speaker terminals. The sub is 4ohm DVC wired in parallel, so I might have a broken voice coil. Does this sound like what has happened?

If I need replacement speakers, I'd like to go with two ported 15's instead of a single 12. The amp I have is a Hifonics 1608D, 1 ohm mono stable, so ideally I'm looking for 4ohm DVC subs for a 1 ohm load. Any suggestions on replacements for this [possibly] blown RE SX12? I'm leaning more toward SQ than SPL, but would like a good combination of the two.

what are you pushing that sub so much, do you clip it??
Your sub will be dead if it is not already

If you measure 4R instead of 2, I would say that coil has shorted somewhere already, maybe only one is still working

I only know of DD, since its SQ with SPL, so called SQPL, probably made up term, but still. its sq but they can be loud doing that
Do you have the space for 2x15"?

close and on the right track...

One coil is open (infinite resistance) not shorted. If it were shorted it would read ~ 0 Ohms.

"Now the sub no longer gets hot, but it doesn't get as loud and I can only measure 4 ohms at the speaker terminals." Speaker terminals of the amp, woofer box or driver it's self? A 4 Ohm dvc driver should measure less than 4 Ohms per coil with a VOM.

I second Digital Design Audio for their subs if you are going in a ported box. They are about the only america made sub these days and they can build your sub to spec if you give them a call.

What amp did you have conencted when you sent it 50v? That probably half charred one or both voice coils, and then the Hifonics Brutis took it out the rest of the way. I kind of like Kicker amplifiers more than Maxsonic brands, but there are just too many variations as to why this keeps happening to you.

I was thinking more of a quick burn, like the one you get with clip, where only bottom part of the coil gets over the temp of the wire and glue.. now I don't know how the wire is laid on the folmer, but there is potencial to short only part of the turns, but then again, never seen that, only seen higher then normal or fully open readings
