Default MTX thunder801d

Just wondering if anyone had an idea why the the dc input filter caps would go on a MTX thunder801d amp, 2200uf@50V. There are 2 of these and I replaced one a few months back with a generic cap. The new cap is swollen and bad again and the one i left in is bad as well..

Could this amp survive reverse polarity and only take out theses caps or is this a heat issue?

The 801 has 80v caps.

The 2200@50v looked original but it may have been replaced before. Why 80V caps on a 12v system? Back emf out of the transformer or something?

I thought you were referring to the rail caps (which are actually 4700uf).

Many times, the primary filter caps have a significantly higher voltage than the B+ voltage. Caps with higher voltage ratings typically have lower ESR which means that they'll run cooler and will be more reliable.

If you're replacing the primary filter capacitors, you need to use 105C, low impedance capacitors.
