The most common problem on the head units with the faces that fold down of flip around are the ribbon cables. If not one else has any experience with this problem, I'd suggest that you replace the ribbon cable.
I'm assuming that you've checked all of the fuses and have confirmed that you have both constant and switched voltage at the power plug where it plugs into the head unit, as well as a good ground.

What's the date on the label on the bottom of the head unit?

That's the older one. There's a newer one also.
Do you have the service manual?

In my deh-p980bt my screen went out once, came down to a 1ohm smd resistor on the main board. once you have the service manual backtrack the power for the faceplate and make sure its getting what it needs
