Hello. Okay this may sound kind of odd but bear with me
I want to be able to control the volume level of the amplifier in my car, by putting a potentiometer in the signal wire going to it, between the CD player and the amp. Could you please tell me what kind of potentiometer I'm looking for? I'm sorry but I'm new at this kind of thing. I know how to solder but I don't know very much about impedence or wiring or that kind of stuff. I do know that the signal that is going to be going to the amplifier is around 5 volts, give or take a few, if that helps. Also, would I need a different potentiometer if it was a stereo signal versus a mono? (I realize, of course, that there are companies that make perfectly good amp volume controls, but they are all really ugly things that use really cheap-o components and besides I love doing things myself anyways) Thanks for your help in this matter,Rockworthy |

Thanks for the radio shack part number, it's funny I never thought of good old Radio Shack! The diagram however, leaves me a bit confused: What does "shield of all 4 cables" mean? Thanks.

When you cut the RCA cable, you'll have 4 coaxial cable ends. When you strip those ends, you'll have 4 shields and 4 center conductors. You can twist all of the shields together and solder them across the two terminals of the pot or you can twist the shields for each channel together and solder them to the terminals individually. The attached diagram shows them soldered individually.
