I need some help repairing this Alpine 7940 that was just given to me.. It does not power on so that leads me to believe there is something wrong in the internal psu?..... The guy touched the + lead to the case.. And upon opening I find D801 blown and cracked.. Any help? or is it even worth messing with?

If D801 is located very near the plug, it is the reverse polarity protection diode. If it is visibly damaged, the radio was overfused and connected with power and ground reversed. Simply replace the diode and repair the burnt trace between the plug and the diode.

Is there an IC mounted to a heat sink or to the back or side cover of the unit. If so, what is the number on the chip? And what is the location number, IC XXX

No there is no IC... I see where it would go.. but this unit is a dead head and has 3 preouts.. and I do have voltage to where the IC would be....

I am not talking about the output Chip. That unit may be too old, but there is a multiple voltage regulator on some of the newer units. HA13165 is the number. I have replaced a couple of them. If your unit has this part, I would begin checking there.
