How safe is it to run a P250.2 in bridge mode @ 2ohm? Even if I turn down the juice? I got a free JL 10W3-DVC(4ohm x2) so I have to run it at 2ohm or 8ohm. If I turn down the gain is it safe to run the amp bridged and at 2ohm?
Thanks |

In general, no. If you need the extra power that the 2 ohm load would produce, it's likely that you will drive the amp too hard which is likely to make it fail. If you don't need the extra power, run it at 8 ohms mono (4 ohms stereo).

I actually would like the sub to be 4ohm! Then it would be perfect.
sub = 300w rms w/ 2x 4ohm voice coils amp = 250w rms @ 4ohm Maybe I'll have to just get a new sub... oh well. |

You wouldn't lose much by setting it as 8ohm.
Remeber - you will only lose 3dB, which isn't a staggeringly huge number. At 2 ohm, the amp would try to put 500W through it. The circuitry, PSU etc aren't rated that high, so the amp would fair, a while after the burning smell which we all know so well will come along, and you'll need a new amp (take this from someone who got over 100W out of a 50W amp, until the smells came). Alternatively, feed both channels of the amp with a mono input, then plug one channel into each coil (make sure the + and - are the right way), which would do what you're after, at a safer load. Running the amp in bridged into 8ohms will make each side see 4 ohms (don't ask how) so you should end up Ok.

I wish I could
I tried a few configurations.. Amp Bridged @ 4ohm (250w) / Sub @ 8ohm (125w) Amp Stereo @ 2ohm (125w) / Sub @ 2ohm (125w) Amp Stereo @ 4 ohm (60w) x2 / Sub @ 4ohm (60w) x 2 They all end up with 125w in the end. I think they all actually sound the same. There's a slight chance that the bridged and sub @ 8ohm sounded a little better. |
