Also of note,Some (most?) 6V cars had a *positive* ground setup,so you might want to check on that also.
Good point - you might well find that the radio has a jumper or similar to change between pos and neg ground.

Just found out its a Carmen Gear (not too sure of spelling), i don't know the model or what it looks like.

Nordic, i did think of a 7806 but wasn't sure it could supply the current, but Quazi's schematic sorted that problem out.

Dan,

If it's a Kharmann Ghia (VW), then it most likely has a Generator, rated at only 30A, max, output. Not discounting the advice of all ther Power Supply gurus here, because most of their advice is solid and based on sound principles, I think you might want to re-think the linear regulator idea, especially with a source limit of only 30A. Every ampere of output from the generator is precious, and should not be wasted. Just my two cents, though.

Nick,

I still owe you that schemo. Can't find it, so I will have to create it in Express PCB andd send it to you.

Steve

Dan2,

I wouldn't fret too much about it at this point. Early VW's were 6V cars. Early (that is 1960's) Kharmann Ghias were among them.
Some folks do convert those cars to 12V during restorationsto make parts replacement easier.

My opinion only:

If you find it to be a 12V car, use 7805's with 2 diodes in series with the reference to create a ~6V source. No disrespect to N-channel here, but it won't burn off *that* much more current than the radio alone. Even better, help him search ebay or the likes for a 12V period correct radio. Blaupunkt made radios for most German and European cars in that era.
