I have an amp here that i'm getting ready to work on that has insulators underneath the output transistors. They appear to be in good shape but i'm wondering if I could use kapton tape in place of the old insulator as i don't have any new insulators laying around.

Yes you can.
as long as you clean any old debris away from the mounting surface and use a thin even layer of thermal grease you should be fine with kapton tape. just don't tighten the mounting screws down too tight or you could break through the thin kapton and arc the transitor body to the heatsink:hot: :hot:
