TDA1521 chip amps rock!

Posted 23rd May 2014 at 03:13 AM by abraxalito

Here's my prototype TDA1521 dual mono arrangement - two chips per channel in bridged/parallel, sat atop 400,000uF hexacaps. The neutrality has taken a while to get used to but I'm lovin' em....

    Hey Richard
Proceeding to fix the supplies in my gainclones here... too low capacitance! Caps aint cheap here though.

Is that a bridged/parallel setup? How does it compare to LM3875?

Yeah bridged paralleled - the paralleling has to be via capacitors though as the DC offset variations are rather too high.

Order up some caps from China - try eBay!

LM3875 I haven't heard but I used LM3886 for a long time, these TDAs are richer in terms of timbre. I reckon their IMD performance is better, they let instrumental sounds come through clearer, especially piano.

More good news - any particular reason for specifically the TDA1521, versus another TDA unit?

Are they able to go up to clipping without audible degradation ... any downsides?

Hopefully, these are not too hard to answer ... :D

The TDA1521 looks to be similar internally to the TDA8566 which I had great sound with last year. But the 8566 is limited by its upper working voltage (with sound playing) of 18V. OTOH the 1521 goes up to 42V, albeit with reduced current output - hence the bridged/parallel approach.

I've not run them up to clipping yet as my DAC hasn't enough voltage output. Needs a new output trafo which means some time has to be spent winding. The amp's gain at the moment is just 30dB. I suppose I could get them to clip by decreasing the supply volts but that's not going to be a particularly stringent test....

    Hi Richard,

I am curious about the Philipx/NXP chips and stumbled across this board:

    DC 19V 24V 32V Classic TDA1521 | eBay

Does it look ok? Otherwise I'll order a tda8566/61 with some parts.

Yes it looks OK, I have noticed that board on Taobao before, here's the link to it - https://item.taobao.com/item.htm?spm...cket=13#detail
Its selling well on Taobao, if you use Google translate you might even be able to read the comments (assuming you don't already read Chinese).
