i also got USBDAC from you. it's very good sound and convenient to play WAV or APE by Foobar2000.

Give the DAC a good 100 hours to fully open up. The blackgates continue to get better over 300 hrs. I leave mine on all the time and it is excellent.
Then drop Foobar and pair CPLAY & CMP to this DAC and you will be blown away. Very short USB also good.

Hi Samoloko,

I've never heard of real substitutes for Black Gates when it comes to electrolytic caps in coupling / decoupling applications. Further more, sound of caps really is a matter of personal taste. I would go for some nice film caps, MKP's or KP's.

If size matters, I would recommend to outsource the caps from the pcb completely. Then you have the possibility to try every cap you want.

I did the same in a recent project when I decided to use some russian military pio's, bypassed with a small film cap of same value. Very nice result, and much better than some ordinary electrolytics...

Regards - martin

I expressed my views on capacitors here: http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/showthread.php?postid=574431#post574431

I've been using Panasonic FC for many years and don't plan replacing them with anything else. BGs were fine, but only for limited production of certain amp models. I still keep substantial stock of Black Gates for future needs (to be used in actual products only and not sold for parts).

And why would I like FM if FC work fine for me? ;)

The only other caps I would be interested to try out are already mentioned BC Components (used originally in Gaincard)

A phono stage circuit will be available soon. I've been experimenting with it since last winter and finally came out with a version that practically competes with anything out there. A first prptotype have been already presented here: http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=145383 however the board pictured below is much more practical and convenient. The phonostage circuit is coupled with a shunt reglator (which is double the size the phonostage itself) in a package similar to previously offered NOS DAC design. Both sections can be separated and used on its own.

The boards go into production next week and should be available in 3 weeks or so, after I'm back from my European vacation ;)
