Just to make sure, have you decoupled the motor? There are couple of red screws underneath the platter which are used to tighten the motor into transport position. If those two are tightened the motor noise can be horrible
If not, there can be problems on your motor - at least needing a relube.

Yes - I've undone the transit bolts. I've dismantled, cleaned and re-lubed the bearings at both ends, but to no avail. I made a post on the new Audiogon Home Despot thread, and the concensus is that I have to check the wiring, and then try re-positioning the armature.... Sounds daunting.
