Default Mods for the Thorens TD321 ?

Having discovered the vinyl media, and its excellent qualities, i have found a successor to my Rega Planar 2, which I think sounds a bit dull and boring - a Thorens TD321, that I have fitted with a RB300 arm.

I think that the construction it self seems rather well thougth of, with its heavy subchassis, and the suspended plinth - and I cant think of much to add here. However, the motor recives 18 volt AC from a small adaptor, and I was thinking of building a crystal controlled amplifier to source the 18 volt ac at 150 ma, to avoid flux in the ac frequency - but I have read that the 321 has a servo controlled motor - does this mean that some sort of active control mechanism exist, in order to take care of this potential problem with variations in the AC frequency ?

Anybody have any other ideas for improval of this TT ?
Anybody have suggestions for pickups for this combo - I have a Pass Pearl preamp, MM only, and my speakers/amp lean towards the neutral/dark.

Cheers !
Buhl

Hi Buhl,

try here for lots of info :

http://www.theanalogdept.com/thorens_dept_.htm

You should find the motor control is more sophisticated than you think.

Regarding pickups :

The Goldring 1042 is always a good choice, the Audio Technica AT 440 ML
is also a superb value choice but it can tend towards sounding bright.
