Does anyone know whether the Garrard KS40A cartridge is magnetic or piezo?
I'm resurrecting an old turntable to convert my last couple of LPs to CD, and wondering what kind of equalization to apply. cheers, Pete McK |

I looked in my books and found nothing. A resistance check will reveal the difference because a piezo will be an open circuit. Unfortunately, I'd be wary of such a test because the DC could magnetise a magnetic cartridge and cause distortion. On the other hand, a Garrard cartridge will be so old that its design will be pretty awful, so the effect of a bit of DC magnetisation might easily go unnoticed...
Before you think I'm biased, I've been using a Garrard 301 for the last 30 years!

thanks, EC8010, I'll try that.
I'm not expecting amazing results, just want to hear those old records again. The TT is a 6.300 automatic, nothing like the class of a 301 unfortunately. Cheers, Pete McK |
