Hi all
I'm new to turntables, and I'm thinking of buying one. I think the Thorens TD166MKII looks real cool, with it's no nonsense and seventies look. How about the sound? Is it good? And is there something I should know and / or be aware of with this turntable.? Which turntable would you recommend to me, as a beginner? Thanks Carsten |

"From the TD 150 the TD 160 and TD 166 were derived. The TD160 has high end quality although it does not have the wooden armboard. The TD160 is well designed and uses an aluminium/zinc inner platter and practically any 10" tonearm can be mounted, whereas the TD166 is a cheaper model because its inner platter is of a plastic compound and it has a standard Thorens tonearm. The TD160 has value and moreso if it is offered with a quality tonearm. Never expect the TD166 to be sounding like a TD160, because it is not high end. And do not believe the slogan indicating that the TD166 is "very sought after record player"."

ok.
How about the luxman pd277. I think I'll choose between the thorens and the luxman. I've just found out that the thorens I saw for sale is with the black coated finish. I'd like it to be the wood finish. The luxman I've seen for sale is with a wood finish. ok. bye Carsten sorry if my questions are foolish. I'm just trying to figure out which turntable will be good for me. Both in finish, sound and price. |

I can't comment on the Luxman as I don't know him or her if you like.
![]() I owned the TD160 and still have the TD166 and I found them rather critical to adjust. They are some fine pieces of mechanics and should be treated accordingly. Luxman is Direct Drive, Thorens belt driven which is often preferred by audiophiles. If I had to choose I'd go for the Thorens, well, probably because I like these old beauties. /Hugo
