I am a total Vinyl neophyte. I was enlightened recently as to superiority of the sound of vinyl when compared to digital sources ( although SACD came close). I have a old belt drive Yamaha TT in my sights but I would like to know wether it is possible to replase the old S shaped tonearm with a newer straight Rega 250 or Linn Basik tonearm. I'm not looking for the end all be all of turntables but merely a good one. The rest of my system does not justify a $1000 dollar or even $500 dollar TT. Thanks.

I don't know which Yamaha you have, but generally tonearm transplants are quite doable if you have access to a milling machine.

It's doable, but a big PITA unless you really want the project for it's own sake, look for a pre-loved Rega TT, a Denon DP75/80 or a Thorens 320/321.
