Dual 1246 tone arm

Just took my Dual 1246 turntable out of retirement. It works great when operated manually, but in auto the tonearm moves about a quarter inch off the tonearm rest and then stops and the whole thing shuts down. What could be the problem and how is it fixed?

Probably just needs a good clean and lube.
If you're inexperienced at this, it would be a good idea to get a service manual - they're easily available still: check the Web.

pay particular attention to the platform and plunger mechanism that moves the tonearm. it relies on friction to move the tonearm. i took mine apart, cleaned up the parts, and roughed up the platform surface with a razor knife. works fine now! and yes, clean and lube all moving parts. get rid of the old, hard grease.
