Here's a selection of Duals that I've mentioned above:
First picture shows a 1218, three speeds, heavy 11" platter.
2nd are both my 1219's, three speeds, heavy 12" platter. Left one in an original Dual CK 21 plynth, right one in a plynth that supposedly has been built by a previous owner by modifying a R2R recorder case.
3rd is a 1228 sitting in a Wega Studio 3231 hifi console. Two speeds, heavy 11" platter, in-built strobe. Note the warped mat that I still have to replace.
4th is a 1229 in a Wega plynth. 3 speeds, heavy 12" platter, in-built strobe.
5th is a 1239. 2 speeds, lightweight platter, in-built strobe, belt drive (all the others are idlers).
6th is a 1229 in a Wega Studio 3220 hifi console. Note the levers that came from a 1219 and the strobe that I've converted to LED's, due to defunct and obsolete neon lamp. It is shown in pic #7. This presently is my everydays' listening equipment.
8th shows a heavily modified 1226 in a Grundig Studio 2000 HiFi console. I used the chassis of a 1226 that I've got with a broken tonearm and replaced it by the arm of a 1228. The shadow pole synchronous motor and the platter are from a 1228 as well, so this TT basically is a 1228 without the strobe now.

That is an impressive family!
I want to thank you for all the tips. I inspected the s......pimple and was unsure if it was worn or not. It is still flexible but very short and seemed to be barely making contact with the mating plate. So I cleaned and sanded the mating surface, fashioned a replacement plastic piece from coax insulation and made it about 1.5mm longer. The auto return is now working! I haven't put the cartridge back in yet to check the rest of the operation.

This tiny plastic cap called Steuerpimpel in German is well known as the most probable reason of a failing automatic function. In TT's of that age, it most probably is broken, worn - or even missing.
Amazingly, the left hand sided 1219 shown in pic #2, which I've pulled out of the local dumpster about a year ago and is one of my oldest TT's with a very low serial number, but it's pimple appeared as new!
