Default Any Turntable Bargains to look for DIY type? New to Vinyl

As I appear to be finishing my pair of F4 amplifiers, my wife said she is ready for vinyl. We had agreed not to go vinyl a couple of years after seeing how large the audio projects were becoming. So for now, we will limit ourselves to ONE milk crate for vinyl.
Any recommended turntables out there, ready to play and sound great for $200 to $500? Even better if they would be suitable for future affordable upgrades that can be completed by someone with tools, basic metal and wood fabrication equipment and in the past have been able to locate friends with machine shops.
I get that I need to build a pre-amp, and not including that in the $500 top end budget.
I ask here because based on past experience with search engines the results are usually articles with advertising or direct links to commercial sites. A way of saying I don't trust an article written by someone to make money, and don't know how to navigate around turntables, with such a small knowledge of the subject.
Cheers
