I'm more at home with XP and DOS than with audio equipment - a complete beginner! Please help.
I have a Hitachi (HT-MD30X) turntable that I want to connect to a Sony Hi-Fi system (RDS). Problem is that the turntable is old and seems only to have a FLAT 5-pin DIN connector. The Sony only has phono sockets in the back. My extensive search for an apaptor has been fruitless.
Since I'm a complete beginner, can anyone put me out of my misery? For all I know I may be trying to connect a light bulb to an electric torch.
I'd be really grateful for information. In the roof space I have a stack of top class vynil LPs that I want to resurrect and transfer to audio CD.

You need to make sure the system has a magnetic cartridge input.
The relevant input should have a small binding post for earth.
Any repair shop should be able to cut off the DIN and fit two
phono and leave an earth wire.
If you have a multimeter and soldering iron, and a few
other tools its not a difficult job for the beginner.
The other option is to get a phono lead, cut off the plugs at one
end and replace the DIN lead with this lead and an earth wire.
This is somewhat easier that fittiing phono's to some DIN cables.
If you need futher details, say so. Please specify the cable, i.e.
a twin run, seperate earth, 4 core overall screen ........

Hitachi if you want to achieve top class transcriptions to CD.

Hi, if your sony does have a suitable level input, go to the maplin website and do a search for RW17 and you should find a cable capable of connecting up your equipment.

And the adaptor required needs a DIN socket, not plug.
Even if you could find a lead with a DIN socket to 2 phono plugs
and an earth lead the extra capacitance it would introduce is
definetely not a good idea at all.
Fitting phono's to the cable or recabling is the sensible option.

DIN sockets and plugs are universally round.
(I was confused as to why a japanese turntable would have DIN)
I'm concerned that its an ex system turntable, with power
supplied from the system via a non-standard connector,
and it won't work without the system powering it.
If it doesn't also have a mains cable, this is the case.

I described the connector to a friend who said it was a DIN socket. Obviously it isn't. It's a five pin flat connector very similar to the one that connects a PC processor's power supply to the motherboard. It has two cables leading into it - one of which must be the power supply.
I think I'll try purchasing a Sony turntable with its own mains cable.
