I use a test record to calibrate the force. It has 5 levels of distortion, the highest level has the least amount of modulation. You adjust for equal amounts of volume from left to right channels.. You can actually adjust the anti-skating to a point where the distortion in one channel becomes inaudible.

What's the make and model of turntable?
I remember a Dual that turned on by the angle of the tonearm - pushing it from the rest stand toward the record would activate the on/off switch, and it took enough force to do that that I found it really annoying. I worried that it pushed too much on the tonearm bearings.
