Default Hey, if it works........

I unwisely pinched pennies and got a cheap e-bay head shell for my Pioneer PL112D TT with a Shure M97xE but, I was not happy with the headshell for various reasons.

So, I got a much better Ortofon HS .

It definitely made a bit of an improvement but now the VTA seem to be a slight bit off. However the tone arm height is not adjustable.

So, I got an idea. I placed a perfectly flat "garbage" record under the stock rubber platter mat and..... the result is a bit of audio magic.
No, it did nor make a silk purse out of a sow's ear but it made a very noticeable improvement. Everything is now more balanced and detailed etc .

Perhaps in addiction to adjusting the VTA it also has some beneficial dampening effects for the platter?
