Please help if you can. This AKAI tape deck has stumped me for several days now:
  • Pinch roller and braking solenoids do not engage.
  • Solenoid diode clamps are ok.
  • Forward and reverse torque motors are being held by the brake.
  • Reversing solenoid works as it should.
  • The power supply produces the correct voltages.
  • I've checked for any bad connections and/or poor solder joints.
  • All the switches and mechanisms have been lubed and Deox'ed.
  • All the electrolytic caps have been tested.
  • All the microswitches have been tested.
  • Tape reels mounted or not makes no difference.

Pinch roller and braking solenoids do not engage.

I think these problems can be caused by switches SW2 and SW4. I at least have found SW2 defect after a cleaning operation. Is oriented downward and parallel with another switch is harder to "notice" defect

AKAI GX 260D

I have just inherited a non-working unit and see others have had problems in the past. Don't know what is wrong: here is the status:
Depress power switch on : capstan immediately rotates but no drive on tape reel.
Stop will not work but put in reverse but again no drive on reel.

I looked at removing the triple switch assembly but if I did I'm guessing I have an electrical nightmare to deal with?

This looks like a great unit if I can get it working.

Can anyone help?
