I picked up a Nakamichi BX-1 on the cheaps at Goodwill the other day and thought I'd get running again. I cleaned all the leaf switches, rollers, etc, put a little lube on the friction points, replaced the old idler wheel, and she runs like a dream EXCEPT when a tape is in. All functions work with no tape, but with one in it, she'll plays for about a second, then stop. Most of the things I've read on this problem mention replacing the rubber idler, and I've done that to no effect. The roller has good contact with the capstan...I'm puzzled. Any suggestions?

This problem can be due to the take-up wheel. U have to hold it in the fingers and see that it has enough pull. It should not stop with a light hold.
If it's take-up is driven by a separate motor, it's speed might have reduced. Visually check whether the tape between the capstan and take-up gets slackened. Gajanan Phadte |
