Hello all,
After several hours of fruitless googling, I'm hoping that this forum is the right place to come for some answers. My first question is simple. What is necessary to connect an electret mic capsule to an xlr jack supplied with phantom power? What electronics are needed to make that connection? I took apart a shure 839 and it had mnimal electronics inside. I imagine most of the electronics were used for switching between battery and phantom power. That's the crux of my first question. Thanks, David |

Thanks for the reply. I apologize if this is posted in the wrong section. I'm not trying to build a mic, just figure out how they work, so that my device will work with them. I wasn't sure if I should post my whole project, or just ask limited questions. My project is to build a muting device for lav/headset mics. The first step, and so my first question, was to determine what components are where in a normal lav. What is included in the electret capsule? what is connected outside the capsule, but on the lav itself? what is inside the beltpack to connect to the xlr cable? I've determined that all standard lavs are based on an electret capsule. Now I wonder how standard lavs connect to a phantom powered xlr jack. thanks

Thanks for the links.
I don't intend to build mics myself, I just was hoping to learn about what an electret needs to work. I know that the plain electret needs a preamp, which should be located as near to the mic element as possible, but I'm not sure where it is located in most lav or headset mics... On the beltpack, or in the mic housing. |
