Default Aluminium & O-Rings - My Record Weight

Here is my first piece of self-designed audio equipment that has been completed... a humble record weight.

- Free Machining Aluminium (I'm an Aussie... the 'i' is intentional )
- 295 grams (10.40 oz)
- Base diam 76.2mm (3")
- Height 50.0mm (~2")

The machining was completed under full guidance of a friend of mine. I decided to make a couple of these as I had the stock and the time... I don't yet have a system of sufficient resolution to really need one of these, however I do feel like it cleared up the sound a bit, particularly the bass. Tonight they'll get a spin on a friends club system, which is better than an average PA. I'm interested to hear if the additional damping helps at higher SPL's.

The design is attached, feel free to use it (change it, improve it, throw it out). I've read a lot of information regarding record weight design... most of it seems highly unnecessary. I chose a weight, a material and a base dimension... the rest appeases cosmetics and ergonomics. A mass of ~300g holds the record down sufficiently without restricting back cuing, and free machining Aluminium is more highly self-damped than steel... plus you can machine it more freely!

It's simple, but I think it's pretty... and it just might make my records sound better.

Regards,
Tani.

Nice work. I miss having access to lathes and milling machines. Machining aluminum is fun.

Very nice work Tani. If you are interested you could compare a sandbag of equal weight to see what additional benefit there is from the frictional loss of the sand particles. A simple baggie with a twist tie will throw together in a few minutes so you can hear the difference. Best regards Moray James.

Yes, very nice work indeed. One of these days someone will motivate me to fire up the lathe and milling machine.

I can believe your comment about your records possibly sounding better, when I got a Bren1 for my TD-124 I had exactly the same impression - it does after all clamp the record more firmly to the platter.
