Default Arm / cartridge advice please!

Greetings all,

I have recently dug out my LP gear after many years of storage. I have a couple of hundred LP's that need cleaning thoroughly (mould, argh...), plus a UK made "Systemdek" player- belt drive, glass platter, early Rega RBIII type arm fitted with an ATF3 MC that needs replacement. I built an Elektor low o/p MC headamp for this in 1992.

I also have (in original box!) an SME 3009 S2 improved from about the late 70's that I retired on buying the Systemdek. I used a Shure M75ED MM. My question is, given I need to buy a decent new cartridge for the Rega (I am thinking ATF3 or similar again), is it worth investigating use of the SME arm (and a new MM cartridge?) What is current thinking on arms like the SME (and the necessary high compliance cartridges) vs the basic Rega? My CD player is a Sony CDP308 circa. 1987 (still going strong...).

Thanks!

This question might find a better answer over at Vinylengine.. I'm not familiar with the RBIII but would suspect that a 3009 S2 Improved on the right table and with the right cartridge might be an improvement. Note that there are lots of upgrade tweaks available for the S2 Improved as well.

Many thanks for the tip. I'll give Vinyl Engine a try. I'd like to give the SME another shot as it's a lovely piece of engineering. Cheers,

Tim.
