Angling for 90° - tangential pivot tonearms

All

The bearings for motion in the vertical plane that I used in my 1980s Tangential Arm and later in my 2010 Tangential Arm are of the zero friction/ zero stiction type. I don't know that Frank is using those bearings, but the description fits.
I am also using them in my 2012 Tangential Arm. This is a servo arm with absolutely no tracking error.
I'll describe it soon in its own thread.

Sincerely,

Ralf

Here's an interesting arm that uses a straight headshell with no offset angle. The idea is to lessen side force so, alas, it has nothing to do with tangency. The bearing design is interesting with floating liquid. Check out the website.

This is a servo arm
Definitely the best solution cause it solves near all issues at once. No distortion due to angle error, no distortion due to angle errors of the cantilever and non symmetrical forces on it, no added frictional or inertial forces.
Remain only one: Torsion constraints on the signal wires. Can be solved with 4 neddles immersed in 4 buckets filled with liquid metal. That i did in 1967 with mercury (allowed at this time).
Strait arm on a ramp addresses a great part of this problem as the arm don't change his angle if the record is flat and well centered. So the wires can be in neutral position.

Schröder LT tonearm

More revealing pictures of the LT arm. Notice the guiding mechanism below the pivoting plate in line with the armwand.... and of course the straight headshell with no offset angle.

Exceptional thread showing many high end tonearms (completely over my budget new or secondhand!) with loads of advice and ideas. Planning to mod my Keith Monks uni-pivot re-designing a straight head shell, mounting the pedestal on a computer servo driven linear platform. Still waiting for parts to arrive from China (Re-wire to eliminate mercury baths will provide space for sensors) Will post pictures of build and comment on hopefully reduced distortion with better imaging ;-)
