Default Misbehaving Linn

Hello,

I just got my turntable back in my set up, unfortunately this required that it was shipped to me. When I received it, the counter weight had come off the tone arm and was rolling around inside the dust cover. Amazingly, there appeared to be little damage.

When I try to dial in tracking force and anti-skate, things go wrong. The arm is a Linn Basik Plus, with a Audio Technica AT110E cart. With the tracking force and anti skate set to 1.5g (AT recommended), as soon as the needle hits the record, it skates right to the centre. Much higher (2.5 or 3g) anti-skate keeps the needle still, but the sound it awful. Totally out of balance, cracking and popping and what music does get through is thin and totally un-listenable. I checked the cart. alignment with a Linn chart, and a couple of others, and it appears to be fine.

Do I need a new stylus? Is the cantilever / cartridge dead? The set up worked perfectly before, with little anti-skate and low VTF if I remember correctly.

Thanks for any help you guys can be of, I want to check everything before buying a new cartridge.

David

I just re-read the title of the post; it sounds like a 70's soft porn movie.

Maybe the tip fell off the cantilever.AT110E has a bonded tip on a metal base.Check with a magnifier and see if the tip fas a flat bottom. If it does then what is there is actually the tip base so you will need a new stylus.

Thanks for the advice Panicos, it looks like the tip has fallen off. I found a whole new cartridge in my area for only €30. I can't wait to listen to some records!

It's the same, AT110e. I could have gone for something different, but when looking for a stylus, I found one on the Dutch version of ebay for €35 inc. postage (normally about €60). I also read some reviews and found that the 110e is a pretty good cart, punching above it's weight.

Mmm, soft focus and saxophone.

AT110E is a nice one in its price range, even better value at 30 euros. And a good match for the basik plus.Is the turntable a Sondek?

No, it's a Logic Tempo. I'm looking for upgrades / common things to check etc on the net but it appears to be pretty rare, or overshadowed by the DM101.

I think I might take it to bits tomorrow before my cart arrives, have a look at the suspension etc and see if there is anything obvious to be done. Should the bearing hole be flooded with oil, as in visible liquid when the platter / shaft is removed?
