Vinyl track back skipping....

Hi,

I got some old LP records from my friend recently. They seems to be in good visual condition with no scratches and they are free wrapping. Also the surface noise is not that much evident. But, some of them are having some serious back skipping issue. I tried cleaning them using a custom made cleaning solution. Still some of them are having the issue. Is there any way to save those LP records ?

You could stop the record at the point where it skips and examine it closedly to see if there is any dirt/other contamination adhering to the record there, or even a scratch.

Another possibility is that your anti-skate and/or your stylus pressure is not adjusted correctly.

I tried the first method. I was not able to see any visible dirt adhering on that portion. I think, it may be deep inside the groove. Is there any way to identify and correct in that case ? Will repeated washing going to work ?

I have heard of people having to do repeat washing, but I personally have never had a need to do so. There is no easy way to correct a distortion in the groove. I do suspect, though, given the balance of probability, that there may be a turntable setup issue. Have you played any of your older discs recently? Do they perform flawlessly, or do they also jump?

Try setting the antiskate to a lower level or disable it and see if it still skips.
Before this ensure that your turntable is absolutely horizontal. Place a spirit level on your platter and make sure the bubble is centered exactly. It might just help reduce the forces causing it to skip.
You can see large particles on the grooves using a 15x magnifying glass and a strong light. If it's a dust particle causing this then it should be visible. Very small particles would not cause the stylus to skip.

A couple of other items:

Does it skip on a bass note? I've seen this happen and it's due to mismatched compliance between the cart and the arm.

Is your cueing lever down? I had thought I had disabled my cueing lever, but it was actually still bumping the arm and causing it to skip on some records.

Hi,

The player is playing all my records perfectly. This issue is present only for some of the records that I got recently from my friend. So, I am sure that it is not an issue with my player or the player placement.

I will try some repeated rinsing method.......

Hi,

I strongly believe that the issue is due to the presence of some dirt particle inside the groove. When I repeatedly rinse the LP, I was able to play it. So, I am going to do this for all my LP's that is having the back skip issue. I think, I also need to work out on a better cleaning solution.

Is there any better DIY solution that can get rid of such sticked dirt particles from the groove ?
