My Tandberg FM tuner needs a dial string and the preset buttons repaired. I have had trouble finding a company that will make these repairs. Any suggestions? I did get a quote for between $350-$700 depending on condition but that seems rather high for these times. Is it worth it?

If you have any mechanical (DIY) aptitude at all you can probably restring the dial cord yourself. The presets might work fine with a shot of spray contact cleaner. The price you were given seems very high.
