Default Turntable with MAJOR Skipping

I have my old Technics SL-2000 turntable - from college.

I have lots of old vinal stuff that I would like to move to digital, but when I put the needle on the record - it slides over the the center. I have tried adjusting the weight and the anti-skating - it does change the movement but the needle will not track and does not produce any noise but static.

I am looking for any suggestions and help.

Dear friend,
My 2 cents -
If you have some pressure on the cartridge then I would think that you have lost the point on the needle ...

Verify that the needle point is intact and clean ( use a 30x magnifier ), and there is no other damage or tone arm drag.

I don't know that turntable in particular:
If it's tone arm has a sliding counterweight, that may have been bumped ( in storage ) from where it used to be in college.
After through cleaning of the turntable,
Get a SHURE stylus pressure guage.
I would reset the tonearm pressure to 0 as well as as the antiskaking.
Slide the tonearm weight back and forth until the tonearm floats.
Then set the pressure gauge to weigh appropriate for the cartridge.
I set the antiskating close to the marked setting, BUT I reserve the right to tweak if it doesn't seem quite right.

Good Luck
Syd
